OPEN CINEMA presents WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE?

On Wednesday January 19th, OPEN CINEMA’s first screening of the year features the witty and provocative film about kids and food politics, What’s On Your Plate? OPEN CINEMA events always feature a post-screening discussion with invited guests, including Tracy Cullen (VIHA Community Nutritionist), Pia Carroll (Culinary Program, Edward Milne School), Heather Coey (Leadership teacher, Reynolds School) and moderated by Andrea Lawseth, Lifecycles and Growing Schools program.

What’s On Your Plate is a delightful documentary that follows two eleven year-old city kids as they explore their place in the food chain. Sadie and Safiyah visit supermarkets, fast food chains, schoolyards and community supported agriculture. Their conversations with farmers, activists and storekeepers lead them to form sophisticated and compassionate opinions about urban sustainability, inspiring hope and activism. For more information about the film and a trailer, visit www.whatsonyourplate.org.

This family friendly event will be the second in the ‘Cinema in Season’ series in collaboration with FoodRoots Cooperative and sponsored by Vancity. FoodRoots and OPEN CINEMA will be organizing screenings of the film in schools in the Greater Victoria area.
