DOC BC is thrilled to celebrate DOXA and the films made by DOC members. Please join us on Thursday, May 10th 2012, immediately following the screening of Brishkay Ahmed’s STORY OF BURQA: Case of a Confused Afghan, for drinks and tunes by DJ K-Rec to celebrate DOXA and the films made by DOC members.

Story Of Burqa: Case of a Confused Afghan
May 10th – 7:00pm – Empire Granville 7 Cinemas

“Story of Burqa is the unknown story of Afghanistan,” says director Brishkay Ahmed. “I want Afghan women to stop wearing burqas. They have been lied to! We cannot progress with it!” The film uses stock footage – most of which was banned or hidden during the Taliban reign – and interviews with brave and knowledgeable experts. WATCH TRAILER


John Zaritsky, Director Do You Really Want To Know?

The latest film by Oscar winning director John Zaritsky, and produced by former DOC BC Board Member Kevin Eastwood, Do You Really Want to Know? tells the story of three families who have been confronted with the decision of whether or not to be tested for Huntington’s disease, a degenerative neurological illness that is akin to having ALS, Schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s – all at the same time. Leah Mallen, Producer Coast Modern

Leah Mallen served as Chair of DOC BC from 2005 to 2011, and her produced films have garnered awards around the world. In Coast Modern, directors Michael Bernard and Gavin Froome take take viewers on a journey from Los Angeles to Vancouver; from 1922 up to the present exploring modernist architecture on the West Coast. WATCH TRAILER


Rosie Dransfield, Director Who Cares? 
May 9 – 7:00pm – Vancity Theater

In this cinema vérité documentary, director and DOC Alberta member Rosie Dransfeld captures the gritty and dangerous world of Edmonton’s sex trade workers where, in a post-Pickton era, women now voluntarily provide police with DNA samples for future identification. WATCH TRAILER


Julia Szuchs, Co-Director/Producer Vanishing Point 
May 10 – 1:00pm – Pacific Cinémathèque

Produced and co-directed by DOC Alberta member Julia Szuchs, two Inuit communities of the circumpolar north—one on Canada’s Baffin Island, the other in Northwest Greenland—are linked by a migration led by an intrepid shaman. Navarana, Inughuit elder and descendant of the shaman, senses the consequences of rapid social and environmental change, and charts a course into the uncertain future. WATCH TRAILER


Yanick Létourneau, Director United States of Africa
May 7 – 9:00pm – Vancity Theater

African hip hop pioneer Didier Awadi is on a quest to craft an album that pays tribute to the great black revolutionary leaders and their struggle to realize a dream: a united, independent Africa. In this epic musical and political journey directed by DOC Montréal’s Yanick Létourneau, Awadi visits some 40 countries to collaborate with hip hop activist artists. WATCH TRAILER
