CBC’s The Nature of Things and DOC BC/YT/NT present… Science & Nature Filmmaking Workshop for Indigenous, Black, racialized and/or Deaf and Disabled creators
The Program
The Nature of Things is offering a one-day in person workshop and networking opportunity for up to 15 selected documentary filmmakers or production crew from the Indigenous, Black, racialized and/or Deaf and Disabled Communities from BC, YT or NWT.
The goal of this program is to introduce interested filmmakers to the processes and people involved in working in nature and science filmmaking and The Nature of Things.
CBC executives Sue Dando and Lesley Birchard will lead the morning workshops and, with participation from several independent producers who work regularly with The Nature of Things.
The day will include built in time for networking so the participants can get to know the experienced science and nature filmmakers.
Deadline for submission is Dec 16th, 2022
Intended Workshop Date: During the period between Feb 6-17, 2023, exact date to be announced.
Eligibility
This program is open to creatives who are:

- Canadian citizens or permanent residents
- 18 years of age or older
- Located in BC, YT or NWT
- Individuals who self-ID as Indigenous, Black, racialized and/or from the Deaf and Disabled* Communities.
- Working in film and television**
- Interested in Science and Nature Filmmaking
- Not currently employed by the CBC

*This program’s understanding of disability embraces The Accessible Canada Act definition which is inclusive of visible and invisible disabilities, permanent, temporary or episodic in nature.
**The eligibility criteria of “working in film and television” includes employment in a broad range of industry positions.
Commitment
CBC will invite up to 15 participants who will participate in a day long workshop in Vancouver. Travel stipends are available for eligible participants based outside of the Lower Mainland.

Q: Do I have to have a credit on a science and nature film to apply?
A: No – definitely not. We’re looking for people new to the field but interested in this area of documentary filmmaking.
Q: Do I have to have documentary credits to apply?
A: Ideally candidates will have some documentary or unscripted experience, but we value other storytelling experiences and encourage those interested to apply.
